RWA & Stanley Give Golden Gate Parkway a Brand-New Flyover

Collier County, faced with burgeoning traffic, decided that the Golden Gate Parkway and Airport Pulling Road intersection needed a major overhaul and the $38 million grade-separated overpass would be the first of its kind for Collier County. RWA, Inc., in association with Stanley Consultants, provided planning, design plans, permitting, and construction contract bid documents for the proposed overpass and widening of two mile-long parkway project.
The Parkway and its intersection with Airport-Pulling Road were the second heaviest in terms of total traffic volume and total collisions in the county. The existing at-grade signalized intersection was replaced with six lanes of elevated roadway to move the east-west Golden Gate traffic over Airport-Pulling Road. Today, this intersection moves large volumes of traffic safely and efficiently. It reduces congestion and vehicle delays, and is safer for pedestrian and bikers.
The parkway’s shape was also challenging. The geometry of the overpass included concurrent horizontal and vertical curves which made the design and detailing of the steel box girders interesting.
